Short answer: Pu-erh was pressed into cakes and other compact shapes to make tea easier to transport, organize, and trade. Compression also keeps a batch together for storage. Today, cakes remain traditional and practical, but pressing by itself does not make a tea authentic or high quality.

A format built for movement

Yunnan tea historically traveled long distances through difficult terrain. Compressed shapes used space efficiently and were easier to wrap, stack, count, and carry than bulky loose leaf. Different shapes developed for trade, gifting, and household use.

What compression changes

A tightly pressed cake has less open airflow between leaves than loose tea, so it may settle and transform differently. Very tight cakes can also need time to loosen after breaking. Material, humidity, temperature, and cleanliness have greater influence than shape alone.

How to open a cake

Work from an edge or natural seam with a clean tea pick. Point the tool away from your supporting hand, lift layers rather than stabbing downward, and break only what you need. Small intact flakes often brew more evenly than crushed dust.
